Graston Technique

Graston Technique NovatoGraston Technique or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization  (IASTM) uses stainless steel instruments to break down scar tissue and adhesions in tendons, ligaments or muscle. Then stretching and strengthening exercises are used to realign the tissues. This is very effective with chronic problems that just won’t go away.  I add micro-current treatment to the technique to make it even more effective.

Adhesions and scar tissue can occur a couple of different ways.  One of the most common ways is from chronic over use or over exertion. Over use can from repetitive tasks such as typing.  Repetitive over use can occur, when there is a mechanical problem.  For example when a person with pronation or flat feet walks, every step they take causes an abnormal strain on the tendons in their foot, ankle and leg.

This leads to chronic inflammation deep inside the effected tissue, which leads to the development of scar tissue, which leads to more inflammation and more scar tissue.  It becomes a vicious cycle.  When someone hits a tennis ball over and over again it causes inflammation and swelling in the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the arm,and the person gets tennis elbow.

Another way scar tissue can occur is after an injury.  Whenever we tear a muscle, tendon or ligament the body has to repair the injured part.  The body does this with scar tissue. A little scar tissue is OK. But often our body produces too much the body tightens up and you get the vicious cycle I mentioned above.

Graston Technique/ IASTM breaks down the scar tissue and realigns contracted tissue.
